What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) is a sub-specialty of physical therapy which addresses unique movement dysfunctions that may be causing common pelvic floor symptoms such as:

  • Incontinence

  • Constipation

  • Pelvic pain

  • Pubic symphysis pain (SPD)

  • Prolapse (POP) or pelvic heaviness/fullness

  • Lower back pain

  • Sacroiliac pain (SI dysfunction)

  • Pain during intercourse

Pelvic floor physical therapists are often consulted pre-pregnancy, during and after pregnancy to assess and diagnose dysfunction as well as provide feedback during exercise and modify movement based on tolerance to activity. If you experienced complications during your birth, had a cesarean delivery, or are experiencing symptoms such as those listed above, it is highly recommended you consult a pelvic floor physical therapist before returning to exercise.

Dry needling is a treatment which utilizes monofilament needles without the use of an injectate (such as botox or a corticosteroid) to manage and alleviate various types of myofascial and/or neuropathic pain.

Electro-dry needling integrates transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to help increase circulation and enhance tissue healing.

Can be performed with or without cupping, upon request. Cupping is a technique which involves placing “cups” over soft tissue to create a negative pressure system and increase blood flow to a local area which subsequently can help reduce muscle tightness and pain.

A 30-minute manual intervention to help reduce pain and improve cosmetic appearance of scar tissue by performing multi-directional massage over and around cesarean incision.
